The Wauneta-Palisade Broncos lost Friday night at Wilcox-Hildreth, 14-57.
Coach Joseph Frecks said the Broncos’ schedule has been loaded with senior laden teams, including the Falcons which featured Ivan Damit-og. Damit-og averages 178.1 yards per game and 13.7 yards per carry.
Frecks also credited Wilcox-Hildreth with executing very well.
The Falcons stymied the WP offense in the first quarter while putting 18 points on the board.
The offense picked up for the Broncos in the second quarter. WP rushed for 41 yards and completed two passes for 39 yards, including a Chase Rathe completion to Tyler Davis for 33 yards. The pass set the Broncos up with first and goal and Gage Crowell scored on the next play.
The third quarter moved quickly with a running clock.
WP ran the ball three times and completed one-of-three passes, but was unable to find the end zone.
After going to the air in the third quarter, throwing on all seven of its plays, Wilcox-Hildreth relied on the rush to wrap up the game. The Falcons ran six plays in the fourth quarter.
WP ran the ball six times and completed one-of-two passes in the fourth quarter.
The Broncos scored once in the final stanze. Holding Wilcox-Hildreth on fourth down, WP took over on the Falcons’ 34-yard line. Tyler Carl hit Rathe for a 19-yard completion, followed by a 10-yard run by Carl to set WP up on the Wilcox-Hildreth five-yard line.
Billy Straub, WP’s top rusher with 43 yards on 10 carries, scored on the next play. Tyler Davis’ kick gave WP 14 points.
Defensively, Frecks said everyone is doing their job.
“We don’t have one outstanding player, but all of them do a good job.”
Brody Nordhausen, Crowell, Straub, Davis, T. Carl and Chris Carl all had four tackles for WP.
Rathe and Davis each caught two passes for the Broncos for 23 and 51 yards, respectively.
WP’s season will wrap up at home Friday, hosting McPherson County.
Like the Broncos, McPherson County is 1-6. The Longhorns have also beaten Maywood, topping the Tigers 38-19 Oct. 3.
