Wauneta-Palisade head volleyball coach Michelle Harchelroad was looking for some tough competition to start the season for her team. Harchelorad got her wish with a season opening 25-20, 26-24, 27-25 win at Wallace Thursday, Sept. 4.
The same could not be said for the Broncos 25-12, 25-9, 25-11 sweep of visiting Sioux County Friday.
Harchelroad said she thought her team played OK and after watching the game tape found several things to work on.
“I was glad for a close game because they had to really play with some pressure and they handled that well,” said Harchelroad.
The Broncos started off the second set trailing 2-7 and fought off a game point in the 26-24 win.
“We did a good job rallying back and winning,” Harchelroad said. “That says a lot about handling pressure.”
Sydnee Harchelroad led WP with 16 kills on 51 swings.
Lesley Towery also finished in double figures with 14 kills. Towery added three service aces.
Coach Harchelroad praised the solid efforts of seniors S. Harchelroad and Towery.
“Sydnee and Leiauna did a nice job of setting,” Coach Harcheload said. “Nicole (Strand) had a couple of blocks that really helped frustrate Wallace in the third set.”
Leiauna Alberts led the team with 22 set assists.
Alberts and Harchelroad each had 23 digs, while libero Brianna Einsphar had a team high 24.
Against Sioux County Friday, WP set the tone of the night by jumping out to a 10-0 lead in set one and was never challenged.
Coach Harchelroad said this was a much tougher game for her players to gain much practice, adding that it was nice to get all the varsity players in the contest.
Harchelroad and Towery led the team in hitting with nine and seven kills, respectively. Towery hit 0.545. Overall the team hit 0.351.
The Broncos finished with 20 service aces, paced by Alberts’ five and Einspahr’s four aces. Towery, Harchelroad and Ellie Lee each added three aces and Kian Jones had two.
WP will host St. Francis and Rawlins Co., Kan. for a triangular Thursday. The team will spend the day in Trenton Saturday for the Hitchcock County Tournament.
Tuesday the Lady Broncos will travel to Southwest before hosting Chase County Thursday, Sept. 18.
