The Wauneta-Palisade cheerleaders travelled to Overton July 9-10 for the Universal Cheerleaders Association cheer camp.
Team members Christi Christner, Cheyenne Cavanaugh, Taylor Hiett, Emily Day, Faith Simpson, and Kenna Blackman joined 70 cheerleaders from nine other schools.
Team sponsor Ayla Rector said the team learned eight sideline cheers, four crowd cheers, three dances, four stunts and new jumps to bring back to WP.
Rector and Christner agreed that the team learned a lot.
“The best part of camp was being able to learn different cheers and dances that the girls can incorporate in this coming school year,” according to Rector.
Christner was awarded a superior ribbon as the loudest yeller at the camp, plus, was the top jumper. Christner advanced through two preliminary rounds of the jumping competition into the finals with the other top eight cheerleaders. With toe touch and pike jumps, Christner won the contest.
Also competing were Simpson, Hiett and Blackman.
Christner, a senior, was one of 11 named an All-American at the camp, following an audition which included the performer’s best jump, the UCA cheer and an Extreme Routine.
As part of being named All-American, Christner has a chance to travel to London, England Dec. 26 to Jan. 2 and take part in a New Year’s Day parade and televised performance.
Christner said she hasn’t decided if she’ll make the trip or not because of the cost.
