The final activity of the 2013-2014 school year for Wauneta-Palisade elementary students was to be honored for their hard work throughout the year.

Kindergarten through fourth grade students gathered in the gym at the Palisade Attendance Center the last day of school. Elementary Principal Roger Reikofski and teachers presented awards for the top readers in each class, good conduct with Mr. R’s Stars and presented the fourth grade students with certificates, marking their passage from elementary school to the Wauneta Attendance Center.

Reading Awards

The school gave awards for students who performed at the top of their classes in the accelerated reading program. The program allows students to pick books to read from a variety appropriate for their reading level.

After the student reads the story they answer questions that check to see if they comprehend what they read. Principal Reikofski explained, “The system is structured to award points for all the reading and answering that students do right.”

Each student works at his or her own pace and his/her points are kept for a year.

“The nice thing about this program is that it is structured to each student individually, gives positive reinforcement and is a proven program for helping improve student reading successes,” explained Reikofski.

Reading award winners are listed in the photo caption.

Mr. R’s Stars

When Reikofski began his first year at Wauneta-Palisade Schools he wanted to implement a program to reward students for things they do right. Mr. R’s Stars were born. Within the program students are given a star whenever a staff member notices a student doing something good.

“The concept is that often times we get so focused on what is wrong with our lives, ourselves, and our children that we tend to gear everything to fix what is wrong,” explains Reikofski. “It’s not a bad concept, but it has been my experience that the best way to fix what isn’t quite the way we want it is through positive reinforcement and focusing on what is right!”

Through the program students are given a small token when teachers and staff, “Catch them doing something good.” The stars are awarded for classroom work, for good lunchroom habits, hallway conduct and for helping others. “I noticed a student one day stopping to help another student who was struggling with some items...that student earned a star from me for helping out a fellow student,” said Reikofski.
