Wauneta volunteer firemen headed off the first fire of the season mid-morning Monday, May 5. Firemen responded to a grass fire on Road 740 north of Wauneta in the pasture of Mike and Joe Maddux.

“The grass was pretty green and there wasn’t much wind so it didn’t have a chance to really get started,” explained WVFD Chief Bob Goings.

Due to conditions, firemen were able to get the fire squelched fairly quickly.

In total, the fire burned approximately one acre of pasture grass.

The WVFD was able to get it under control and put out without needing to call in other fire departments for mutual aid.

The exact cause of the fire is unknown, although electrical issues are suspected.
