The Wauneta-Palisade FFA rounded out its roster for the State FFA Convention, winning the vet tech and finishing fourth in welding at District Competition Mar. 4 in Curtis.
Teams from WP placed first and second in the vet tech competition, but the school can only take one team. Lesley Towery and Nicole Strand individually tied for first place. The two flipped a coin for first and second. WP placed the top five individuals and eight of the top 10. Tailor Lee was third, Cameo Rector fourth, Cassidy Rathe fifth, Ellie Lee seventh and Tryssta Duvel ninth. Billy Straub was 13th out of 57.
WP I (Towery, Strand, T. Lee and Rathe) finished first with a score of 111 and WP 2 (Rector, E. Lee, Duvel and Straub) scored 99 points. Third place Medicine Valley scored 85 points.
Results were based on three sections: Radiology and Parasites; Tool Identification; and Individual Totals.
WP also did well in the welding competition.
Landon Jutten qualified for State FFA in the oxy-acetylene with a fourth place finish. Logan Fischer qualified as a third place finisher in arc welding. Billy Straub placed fourth in wire feed but will be part of the livestock management team at the state convention so Tyrel Kerchal, who was eighth, will take his spot.
Overall the team of WP1 (Jutten, Joseph Sramek and Kerchal) finished in fourth place and WP 2 (Straub, Fischer and Cody Barrett) was sixth.
The groups will join the Natural Resources and Livestock Management teams at the State Convention.
FFA sponsor Marilyn Houdek was very pleased with the students’ efforts.
“They’re a great group of kids and have worked very hard,” said Houdek.
The State FFA Convention will be April 9-11, 2014.
