The Wauneta-Palisade Bronco boys’ basketball team wrapped up the regular season at home Friday. The Broncos lost to 15-8 Dundy County-Stratton 70-53.
The Broncos struggled to find the bottom of the net in the first quarter. WP was only able to get a bucket from Brody Nordhausen and three-pointer by Wes Anderjaska in over the first eight minutes, while DCS put 20 points on the board.
WP chipped into the Tigers’ lead in the second quarter. Hayden Pollmann carried the lead early for the Broncos, making two baskets in the first two minutes of the quarter. Pollmann added a conventional three-point play to make the score 12-26 with 4:33 left in the half.
Anderjaska made a free throw and basket, followed by a three-pointer by Chase Rathe to bring WP to within nine points, 20-29.
WP closed out the half with two three-pointers by Pollmann to make the score 25-36 at halftime.
The hot shooting slowed in the third quarter. WP got a layup by Rathe and a jumper by Pollmann, before a three-pointer by Lorenzo Cavanaugh. The Broncos only added one Pollmann free throw over the final three minutes of the quarter and trailed 33-49 heading into the fourth quarter.
WP scored on three of its first four possessions of the quarter, picking up a two-pointer by Rathe and a three-pointer by Cavanaugh. Cavanaugh added a free throw the next time down the court to make the score 39-51.
DCS went on a nine point run to extend its lead. The streak ended with a jumper by Anderjaska. Following a Cavanaugh three-pointer, Pollmann traded free throws with the Tigers.
Trailing 46-62, Anderjaska scored seven straight points down the stretch and finished with 17 points.
Pollmann also had 17 points.
Cavanaugh scored 10 points. He and Anderjaska each made three three-pointers.
Seeded fifth in the subdistrict tournament with a 5-15 record, WP took on number four seeded Maywood (7-14) Monday in Bartley.
The Broncos beat Maywood 45-38 Feb. 14 and looked to be in command for much of Tuesday’s game.
WP held a one point lead at the end of the first quarter, 10-9. Rathe scored eight points for the Broncos in the quarter finding a soft spot in the Tigers’ defense along the baseline. Cavanaugh added a nice putback.
WP took a 10 point lead into halftime, 28-18. Rathe added six more points to his total. Pollmann got in on the action, hitting two three pointers and scoring nine points. Landon Jutten chipped in three points.
Maywood cut down on the WP lead in the third quarter. The Tigers scored the first four points in the quarter. Pollmann and Rathe each scored four points in the quarter and Cavanaugh nailed a three-pointer. Nordhausen added a basket and WP headed into the final eight minutes with a 41-32 lead.
The Broncos struggled in the quarter and Maywood pulled ahead thanks to a 15-2 run. Jericho Vieyra led Maywood in scoring, finishing with 21 total points, 17 coming in the fourth quarter when the Tigers outscored WP 31-6.
Maywood made six fourth quarter three-pointers.
Nordhausen scored WP’s first two points of the quarter and the Broncos didn’t make another bucket for the next four minutes, when a Cavanaugh three-pointer broke the dry spell.
A free throw by Anderjaska with two minutes left rounded out WP scoring.
Rathe led the Broncos with 18 points. Pollmann finished with 13 points.
WP finishes the season with a 5-16 record.
With the win Maywood advanced to play top seed Hitchcock County (18-3) Tuesday. Hayes Center (11-9) was seeded third and took on second seed Wallace (17-4) Tuesday. The winners will play Thursday.
In the other half of the district, Paxton (16-6) earned the first seed and played number four seed Hyannis (3-16) Tuesday at Hershey.
Arthur County (6-13) and Mullen (15-7) rounded out the other half of the district.
