With wins over Hayes Center and Maywood in subdistricts, only the Paxton Tigers stand between the Wauneta-Palisade Lady Broncos and a return trip to state.
Beat Maywood again
With a win over Hitchcock County Feb. 17, Maywood advanced to play the Broncos.
The two teams faced each other Feb. 14 in Maywood with the Broncos winning 56-47.
Despite a three-pointer by Sydnee Harchelroad and two pointers by Tailor Lee and Abbie Fanning, WP trailed 7-8 with 3:30 left in the first quarter.
The Broncos responded over the remainder of the quarter, outscoring the Tigers, 9-2. Following two free throws by Harchelroad, Einspahr hit her first three-pointer of the game. Fanning and Nicole Strand rounded out WP scoring and gave the Broncos a 16-10 lead.
The Broncos opened the quarter with baskets by Lee and Harchelroad. Following four straight points by Lee, Fanning increased WP’s lead to 27-16 with a steal and a layup.
WP added five points as time ran out in the half, getting a jumper by Rathe and a three-pointer by Harchelroad with two seconds left.
Leading 34-18 at halftime, the Broncs continued to pull away in the second half. WP got even scoring in the third quarter. Einspahr scored seven points, Lee six points and Harchelroad scored five. Einspahr and Harchelroad each made three-pointers and each finished with three three-pointers.
Leading 53-25 at the end of the third quarter, WP wrapped up the 68-34 win with baskets from Fanning, Einspahr, Ellie Lee and Brooklyn Nordhausen. Strand scored six fourth quarter points.
Harchelroad led WP with 15 points and Lee scored 14. Fanning and Einspahr also finished in double figures, scoring 12 and 13 points, respectively.
Third win over Hayes Center
WP picked up its third win over Hayes Center Feb. 20, 55-32.
T. Lee came out strong for the Broncos, scoring the team’s first six points.
Leading 6-2, Harchelroad added her first three-pointer of the night and Einspahr added a free throw. With less than a minute remaining in the half, the Broncos got baskets from T. Lee and Harchelroad and took a 14-7 lead into the second quarter.
WP started off slow in the second quarter, getting only one free throw each from Nordhausen and Strand over the first 2:30 minutes.
Leading 16-9 the Broncos showed patience running the offense and got a three-pointer from Harchelroad and a two-pointer from Fanning on back-to-back possessions.
The Broncos outscored Hayes Center 7-3 down the stretch behind a steal and layup from Fanning, layup by Rathe and a three-pointer by Harchelroad.
With only seven players, Hayes Center began to run into foul trouble as the first half wound down.
The Cardinals racked up 12 first half fouls, but WP could only make seven-of-17 first half free throws.
Leading 28-12 coming out of the locker room, WP found the tables turned as officials called four travels on the Broncos’ first seven possessions, plus four fouls over the first five and half minutes of the half.
Hayes Center was unable to close the gap.
After a layup by Fanning and three-pointer by Harchelroad, the WP lead was 17, 33-16.
The Broncos extended the lead to 39-20 at the end of the third quarter behind five straight points by T. Lee and a free throw by Strand.
Despite 11 fourth quarter points by Andrea Wach, WP continued to pull away over the final eight minutes.
WP scored five points on its first three possessions of the fourth quarter, getting a bucket by T. Lee, one free throw by Leiauna Alberts and a putback by Strand.
Lee went on to score five more points for the Broncos with a basket by Alberts in the middle.
The Broncos rounded out the win with two free throws by Rathe and a basket by Hannah Nordhausen.
T. Lee led WP with 20 points. Harchelroad finished with 14 points, including four three-pointers.
Hayes Center made seven-of-12 free throws in the contest. WP made 13-of-27 from the charity stripe.
Paxton (11-12) defeated 10-14 Mullen 43-39 and 12-10 Hyannis 57-45 in the D2-10 subdistrict.
WP and Paxton will play Friday night in Wallace at 6:00 p.m. MT/7:00 p.m. CT.
The Broncos (16-8) beat Paxton 49-30 on Jan. 23.
