Wauneta-Palisade cheerleaders Cheyenne Cavanaugh, Taylor Hiatt and Christi Christner performed Friday evening in Grand Island for the Nebraska Coaches Association State Cheer and Dance Championships.
WP competed against Meridian, Alma, Cedar Bluffs, Hampton and Minatare in the Class D non-tumbling division. WP finished fifth. Meridian won the competition and also the Class D Spirit Award.
WP was the last Class D team, taking the floor at the Heartland Event Center at 6:00 p.m. MT/7:00 p.m. CT.
The Cheer Division was divided into non-building tumblings, non-building non-tumbling and non-building sideline for classes A, B, C and D. Each performance was limited to two minutes and 30 seconds.
The Broncos were judged on Crowd Leading Ability, Motions Movement, Incorporations, Overall Cheer Impression, Jumps, Dance and Transitions.
“It was a great experience for both the girls and myself. It was their first time going as a team and it was my first time going as a coach. We definitely learned a lot as to what to expect for next year,” sponsor Ayla Rector said. “They placed fifth and the scores were all extremely close. It was a great trip. It gave the girls an opportunity to bond and see the side of competition cheer.”
