The Wauneta-Palisade Bronco Boys rounded out the RPAC Basketball Tournament Jan. 28 with a 50-57 loss to Maywood.

After allowing Maywood a three-pointer on its first possession, WP scored eight straight points. The Broncos got a three-pointer and two-pointer by Wes Anderjaska, followed by a two-pointer by Hayden Pollmann. One free throw rounded out the WP four-minute run.

Maywood closed the gap with baskets on four straight possessions. With only a basket by Anderjaska to stem the tide, Maywood took a 16-10 lead into the second quarter.

Both teams were cold to start the second quarter. WP got a bucket from Pollmann after a minute and a half was played and Maywood got its first points on two free throws at the 4:36 mark. Maywood followed the free throws with a basket that was answered by Pollmann.

Maywood made four straight free throws and a basket to open up a 26-14 lead with a minute left in the half. A three-pointer by Chase Rathe and a driving bucket by Anderjaska as time ran down brought the Broncos to within 19-26 at halftime.

WP allowed Maywood a three pointer to open second half scoring, but Anderjaska went to work on the boards, getting offensive rebounds on consecutive possessions and making two free throws and one basket.

With WP within six points, 23-29, Maywood made a layup which the Broncos answered with a driving Pollmann basket.

With four and a half minutes left in the third quarter, Maywood went on a 10-2 run, with WP’s only basket coming from Pollmann.

The Broncos responded as time ran down in the quarter. With less than a minute remaining, WP got baskets from Pollmann, Anderjaska and a bank with one second left by Rathe to make the score 33-41.

A putback by Anderjaska cut the Tigers’ lead to six with six minutes left in the game.

Following a Maywood free throw the Tigers’ got a conventional three-point play to push the lead back to 10.

Maywood answered two Pollmann free throws with a basket, then two Anderjaska free throws with a basket to maintain its lead with 3:30 left.

Pollmann converted his own three-point play and Anderjaska hit both ends of a one-and-one to bring WP to within five points.

Two more free throws by Pollmann cut the lead to three, but Maywood answered with two free throws of its own.

Maywood converted another conventiional three-point play with 1:12 left which WP answered with another Anderjaska basket.

Trailing 48-54 with 47.8 seconds left, WP could only add a bucket by Brody Nordhausen while Maywood made three-of-four free throws to seal the 57-50 win.

Anderjaska led WP with 23 points, including making six-of-eight free throws. Pollmann scored 19 points, including all five free throw attempts.

Now 4-11, WP will take on 3-11 Medicine Valley Thursday and travel to Sutherland (6-10) Friday.
