The Wauneta-Palisade boys’ basketball team broke into the win column Friday with a 55-24 thrashing of South Platte. The team couldn’t carry the moment into Saturday’s game with Hayes Center, however, losing 25-41.
Three in double figures
Hosting winless South Platte Friday, WP started slow against the Knights’ patient offense.
WP scored on its first possession with a Hayden Pollmann basket, but South Platte answered with a three pointer.
With South Platte taking its time and passing the ball a lot on offense while not scoring, Anderjaska hit a three-pointer for WP to go with a free throw by Pollmann.
Leading 6-3, the Broncos answered a South Platte basket with another Pollmann bucket. Pollmann totaled seven in the quarter. Anderjaska added another three pointer and the Broncos headed into the second quarter with a 13-7 lead.
Behind four baskets by Anderjaska and stingy defense, the Broncos cruised into halftime leading 29-10.
Pollmann and Chase Rathe each scored four second quarter points for the Broncos.
WP’s hot shooting continued into the third quarter as the Broncos extended the lead.
Behind two Rathe three-pointers, the Broncos outscored South Platte 20-2 in the quarter.
Coming off the bench, Lorenzo Cavanaugh hit a three-pointer and a two-pointer in the quarter.
With the game under control, starters Anderjaska, Pollmann and Landon Jutten didn’t play in the fourth quarter and all 10 Broncos saw action.
Anderjaska finished the game with 16 points and Pollmann added 14.
Rathe hit another three-pointer in the fourth quarter and totaled 15 points in the win.
Travel to Hayes Center
After scoring a season high 55 points the night before, WP scored a season low 25 points Saturday at Hayes Center.
Both teams started the game cold from the field.
The Broncos were first on the board two and a half minutes gone with a give and go between Anderjaska and Pollmann.
Pollmann found McGraw open a minute later to give the Broncos a 4-0 lead, but Hayes Center responded with a 8-2 run to end the quarter.
The Bronco offense sputtered in the second quarter. A basket by Anderjaska and free throw were all the Broncos could add in the quarter. WP headed into the locker room trailing 9-18.
Hayes Center used two runs of 6-2 to increase its lead to 30-13 heading into the fourth quarter.
Landon Jutten and Chris Carl both made a basket for the Broncos in the third quarter.
The Broncos outscored Hayes Center 12-11 in the fourth quarter behind six points from Pollmann who bounced back from tweaking an ankle in the first quarter.
Anderjaska made two baskets in the final stanza and led the Broncos with eight points.
Rathe also made a basket in the fourth quarter and finished with five points.
Now 1-5, the Broncos will face Anselmo-Merna (5-2) Jan. 3 in the Brady Invitational.
Brady (2-3) and Eustis-Farnam (0-6) make up the other half of the bracket.
