The Wauneta-Palisade wrestling squad got in the win column Dec. 13 with wins at the Southern Valley Invitational.
Wrestling in the 170 pound weight class, Gage Crowell won three of his five matches, picking up wins over Ben Serr of Centura, Clavin DeVries of South Central Unified, and Maverick Engel of Norton. Crowell placed fifth.
Jake Day also won his first match of the season. Day pinned Coldin Detascome of Red Cloud/Blue Hill in the 160 pound weight class.
In the 145 pound weight class, Cody Barrett won his first match of the day due to medical forfeit.
Joe Sramek also wrestled for WP at 138.
The 15 team Invitational was run with a pool-type bracket; each wrestler getting five matches, the daily limit. Sramek received one bye.
Coach Chad Cochran said it was more wrestling than his team is used to, but they held up well.
With such a young team, Cochran said the meet, with a lot of matches, helped his team gain some great experience.
“We were happy to get Jake Day his first win of the season with a pin,” said Cochran. “The other two definitely wrestled better than last week but are still working to get their first wins.”
Cochran is looking forward to his team having a good week of practice heading into Saturday’s Fran Jorgensen Invitational.
“Hopefully with a good full five days of practice this week, we can get them well prepared and get them some wins at Cambridge,” said Cochran.
Following the Cambridge meet, the Broncos will be off until the Dundy County-Stratton Invitational on Jan. 11.
The following week the team will be at Chase County.
