The Wauneta Chamber of Commerce is hosting their annual Christmas Kick-off Monday, Dec. 2 at the Wauneta American Legion Hall. The festivities will begin at 5 p.m. MT.
An assortment of chili prepared by various Chamber businesses will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. MT.
Chicken noodle soup and a selection of desserts will also be served. A freewill admission will be charged with proceeds from this event going to a fund with the Village of Wauneta that will be used to purchase new signs for Wauneta’s main street.
Shane Anderson with Frenchman Valley Coop and Kip and Terry Engell representing The HomeTown Agency will defend their titles in the Chili Cook-off.
Anderson took the People’s Choice award away from Kathy and Dave Kerchal last year after the Kerchals held the title for three years, since the annual contest’s inception in 2010.
The Engells will defend their title in the judged category, an honor they’ve held since 2011.
This year’s event will also feature a Christmas tree decorating contest again this year.
Last year was the first time for the decorating contest. Leanne Hunt, representing Valley Bank and Trust, won the Christmas Tree decorating contest. This year the tree decorating contest is open to the public.
All those who attend the Christmas Kick-off will have the chance to vote for the best chili and the best decorated Christmas tree.
Contest entrants will decorate trees prior to the beginning of the event. The trees will then be judged by the public at the Christmas Kick-off.
Kindergarten and preschool children from Wauneta-Palisade will provide musical entertainment at the event, starting at 6 p.m. MT.
New this year, the United Methodist Church will set up an Angel Tree at the Christmas Kick-off festivities.
The tree will feature descriptions of children in need that attend the Wauneta-Palisade School district.
Those who wish to purchase a gift for one of the children can take an “angel” off the tree at the Kick-off, purchase and wrap a gift and return it to Valley Bank.
After the Christmas Kick-off the Angel Tree will be on display at Valley Bank where people wishing to participate in the program will be able to choose an “angel” to help make their season a little brighter.
Chamber members are also gearing up for Santa Saturday coming up Dec. 14. Prizes to be included in this year’s Santa Saturday drawings will be announced during Monday’s Christmas Kick-off with drawing sign-up to begin early next week at participating Chamber businesses.
This year the drawing will be held at approximately 12 noon MT in front of the Chateau Theatre, following a 10 a.m. MT movie showing.
Remember to shop at home in Wauneta when you can this holiday season.
