The Wauneta-Palisade football team’s tough season continued Friday with a 60-28 loss to 2-2 Arthur County.

The Bronco defense held on Arthur County’s first possession of the game and the offense drove to the Wolves’ 11-yard line. The drive stalled on fourth-and-goal.

Arthur County made W-P pay, scoring in five plays.

W-P was unable to answer and the Wolves scored in four plays on its next possession extending its lead to 13-0.

Alternating incomplete passes with runs, the Broncos drove down the field and scored on a 13-yard pass from Chase Rathe to Hayden Pollmann.

Arthur County’s quick strike offense continued to give the Broncos fits. The Wolves scored three more touchdowns to end the first half ahead 33-8.

The Wolves went on to score on both of its third quarter possessions, while the Broncos saw drives stall in Arthur County territory. The first on back-to-back incomplete passes and the second on the team’s only fumble of the game.

The teams traded touchdowns to start the final stanza.

Following a six-yard Wes Anderjaska run, the Broncos completed two passes, the first from Rathe to Pollmann and the second from Anderjaska to Rathe, to move the ball to the Arthur County three-yard line. Anderjaska was able to punch the ball in.

After Arthur County scored two plays later, W-P put together a nine-play, 57-yard drive to make the score 53-22. Anderjaska and Joseph Sramek carried the ball six times while Rathe completed passes to Chris Carl and Anderjaska.

Holding Arthur County to a four-and-out, Lorenzo Cavanaugh took off down the right sideline on the Broncos ‘first play for a 37-yard touchdown with 59.2 seconds left.

The Wolves’ 65-yard touchdown return on the ensuing kickoff made the final score 60-28.

The road does not get any easier for the Broncos this week. The team will make the four and a half hour trip to Harrison and face 3-0 Sioux County Friday.
