Everyone heading east from Wauneta has encountered the dreaded stoplights while heading up Highway 6. There has been a 3.5 million dollar road construction project going on since April.
Although this may have caused some inconveniences, it was much needed.
On the bridges there was cracking and stalling in the concrete which desperately needed attention.
With the roads, the initial issue was fatigue cracking. According to Drew Wilson, the project manager for the Nebraska Department of Roads, “The roads were way past their service life.”
Both the bridges and the roads needed general maintenance work done on them.
BSB Construction, Inc. is doing the shoulder work on the roads, while Werner Construction is doing the bridges and road.
Wilson said there were very few complications during this process.
Some of the bridges needed more attention which was one of the companies only problem they encountered while working on Highway 6.
“The weather has slightly hindered production on the roads and bridges,” said Wilson. With the snow that lasted through April and some of the rain that we received during the summer the construction is somewhat behind.
There will only be construction done within the 8 mile radius between Hamlet and Wauneta.
The entire project is expected to be done by the beginning of October.
