The first section of the Wauneta Breeze’s 125th anniversary edition is complete!

For the past several months, Breeze staff have been preparing for a special edition focused on news reported during the Breeze’s first 125 years of publication.

The first Wauneta Breeze was published by John Hann on Jan. 17, 1887.

The special 125th edition is the culmination of several decades of collaboration. It includes information compiled by former publisher Stan Smith who began the tradition of anniversary editions with a special Diamond Jubilee issue printed in 1961. Co-publishers Russ and Lori Pankonin built on that foundation to bring a special Centennial issue of the Breeze in 1987.

The 125th anniversary edition is a celebration of Wauneta’s history in which information from those two special issues, as well as updated information and pictures, is brought to Breeze readers once again.

Former managing editor, Tina Kitt, has taken the lead on the special edition and has been knee deep in Wauneta history to prepare for the special 125th edition.

Due largely to the size of the anniversary edition, the special publication is being released in sections. The first section, looking at Wauneta’s early beginnings, is included with this week’s paper.

Additional sections of the 125th edition will be released every two or three weeks, until the special edition is completed in mid-May. Each new section will be included with the “regular” edition of the paper.

Once complete, the 125th anniversary edition will include history from Wauneta’s first 125 years.

The final section of the 125th edition will include a table of contents of all information and advertisements included in the special edition.

After the final section is released additional copies of the 125th edition (including all sections) will be available for purchase at the Breeze office or by mail.
