The Wauneta-Palisade Broncos suffered a disappointing loss to wrap up the regular season Friday night at Dundy County-Stratton. After leading for three quarters the Broncos couldn’t pull out the win in the end, losing 56-54.

A three-pointer by Hayden Pollmann on the game’s opening possession gave the Broncos a lead it wouldn’t relinquish until half way through the fourth quarter. DCS did tie the game at 7-7, but a second three-pointer by Pollmann spurred the Broncos on a 12-2 run to end the first quarter.

With the score 18-9, the teams played even in the second quarter with each putting 16 points on the board. The Broncos held DCS’s Joe Rettele to four points in the first half, while Pollmann hit another three-pointer en route to 13 first half points and 18 points in the game. Connor Kayton scored seven points in the second quarter, finishing the game with 14.

The Tigers took a small nibble into the Broncos’ lead in the third quarter. Both teams were hot coming out from the locker room, scoring on the half’s first six possessions. W-P had increased its lead by one to 41-31 over the first minutes of the third quarter. The Broncos headed into the fourth quarter with a 46-39 lead.

The teams traded layups to start the quarter. DCS added two more layups and a free throw to bring the score to 48-46 with 5:14 left in the game.

After W-P missed the front end of a one-and-one with 4:43 left, Logan Bischoff made a basket between baskets on consecutive possessions by the Tigers.

Tied at 50 with 3:04 remaining, the Tigers came out of a time out and scored. WP couldn’t answer on its next possession but got the ball back with a jump ball with 1:57 left. The Broncos responded with a layup by Bischoff then let DCS make a layup of its own on the other end.

Trailing 52-54, an offensive foul derailed the Bronco possession. Getting the ball, DCS converted a one-and-one opportunity on its end, knocking down both with 58.6 seconds left.

The Broncos responded with a Bischoff basket to bring W-P back to within two points. After DCS missed the front end of a one-and-one, W-P had the ball back with 17.9 seconds left but couldn’t get a shot off, giving DCS the ball back to run out the clock.

DCS made 10-17 free throws in the contest. W-P was 1-4 from the charity stripe.

Bischoff finished in double figures with 10 points. Jack McGraw added six points, Weylin Davis four and Wes Anderjaska two points.
