Wauneta-Palisade traveled to Paxton Monday for the opening rounds of the RPAC volleyball tournament.

The Lady Broncos topped Wallace (8-10) in the first round before falling to eventual conference runner-up Paxton.

Wauneta-Palisade started the Wallace match hot, opening with back-to-back service aces by Sydnee Harchelroad.

Wallace pulled ahead by three early in the match, but the Broncos pulled back ahead behind the serve of Cassidy Rathe. Rathe had two aces and Wauneta-Palisade picked up a kill from Harchelroad and a solo block from Brooklyn Nordhausen.

Another five points with Harchelroad at the service line put the Broncos ahead for good. Errors by Wallace and a solo block by Emma Skelton ran the score to 18-14. Four points from Abbie Fanning and an ace from Brianna Einspahr wrapped up the game, 25-19.

The teams were neck-and-neck through much of the second game.

After being tied at 15, Wallace steadily opened up a four point lead, 22-18.

The Lady Broncos whittled away at the Wildcat lead with aces from Harchelroad and Einspahr and kills from Fanning and B. Nordhausen. The rally extended the game, but wasn’t enough. Wallace evened the match at a game apiece with the 27-25 win.

The third game started ugly with the teams combining for three service errors and seven attack errors in the first 15 points. Skelton served six straight points, including two aces, as the Lady Broncos opened up a 9-4 lead.

Although Wallace narrowed the gap to 9-8, Wauneta-Palisade pulled ahead 23-14.

Wallace had a block, three kills and an ace down the stretch to put the heat on the Lady Broncos.

An attack error and in the net call by the Wildcats gave Wauneta-Palisade the set three win, 25-23.

The Lady Bronco offense looked strong in the fourth game.

Wauneta-Palisade picked up kills early from Fanning, Skelton, Rathe and Tailor Lee to go with an ace from Harchelroad and two sharp serves from Einspahr.

Behind the serving of Fanning and kills from Lee the Lady Broncos opened up a 16-10 lead.

Wauneta-Palisade closed out the 25-16 win with a block by B. Nordhausen, her fourth of the match.

Lee led the Lady Broncos with 12 kills. Fanning added eight and Harchelroad seven.

Harchelroad had five aces. Einspahr had three and Skelton and Rathe two each. The team totaled 13 service aces.

Skelton and Harchelroad each had 15 assists.

Skelton had three solo blocks.

With the four set win the Lady Broncos earned the right to take on host Paxton (19-4).

Wauneta-Palisade capitalized on two Paxton attack errors and two aces by Harchelroad to jump out to an early 4-0 lead.

With each team scoring in spurts, Paxton jumped ahead 11-9. Behind the serving of Lee, Rathe and Harchelroad the Lady Broncos retook the lead 20-15.

Skelton’s ace ended the match, 25-20.

Wauneta-Palisade took an early 3-1 lead in set two, but once Paxton got going, it rolled. A five-point serving run by Paxton’s Austin Hackney put the game out of reach and Paxton cruised to a 25-14 win.

Set three was much the same. An eight-point run put the Lady Broncos down 11-2. The Lady Tigers went on to win the set 25-12 and won the match with a 25-8 fourth set victory.

Wauneta-Palisade’s offense struggled late, ending the match with eight attack errors and a four-hits call around three Paxton kills and an ace.

Fanning’s nine kills led Wauneta-Palisade. Lee added seven and B. Nordhausen six.

Harchelroad had four aces.

At 11-10, Wauneta-Palisade wrapped up the regular season Tuesday at Wallace. The Lady Broncos expect to play Wallace for the third time in three weeks in the first round of subdistricts Monday in McCook.
