BWTelcom owner Randy Raile believes in tradition, especially sweet traditions. He remembers Bud Schillinger, a custodian at the Benkelman school who started hosting watermelon feeds for the students 50 years ago.
Almost 20 years ago Raile and his staff were looking for a way to give back to the communities they serve. Austin Vrbas, who’s dad, Denny, works for BWTelcom suggested they host a watermelon feed at the school.
Thanks to Austin’s suggestion and Schillinger’s inspiration Raile and BWTelcom have been hosting annual watermelon feeds at area schools ever since.
The kids at W-P schools have been enjoying the annual feeds since 1995.
Raile said he always enjoyed the watermelon feeds as a kid so he is excited to carry on the tradition for today’s kids.
“I like watching the kids grow up, I have great memories from these watermelon feeds,” said Raile.
Raile, his wife, Loretta, and some of the BWTelcom crew made their rounds last week to the Wauneta attendance center, Benkelman grade school, Benkelman high school and Haigler grade school.
The crew visited the Wauneta attendance center on Wednesday last week when tempuratures were soaring. Comments heard from the kids enjoying the watermelon included, “That is so cold...it’s so good.”
The crew made sure to send plenty of watermelons over to the Palisade attendance center too.
In total, Raile purchased 75 watermelons from Walgren’s Supermarket and the Hometown Market in Benkelman.
