The Wauneta-Palisade baseball C team traveled to Benkelman Friday and Saturday for its season ending tournament.

The young Broncos opened the double elimination tournament with a 2-0 win over St. Francis, Kan.

St. Francis only managed three baserunners in the contest. All three advanced to third base but couldn’t score against pitcher Duncan Rector and the Bronco defense.

In the first inning, Wauneta-Palisade’s first three batters, Dennis Cavanaugh, Dalton Harchelroad and Cade Doetker, reached base. Only Cavanaugh crossed the plate before the inning ended.

Austin Rozelle advanced to third base in the second inning, but didn’t score.

Harchelroad scored the Broncos’ second run when he led off the third inning with a home run.

Cord Lee, Tucker Boos and Cavanaugh loaded the bases again in the fourth. Although none scored, the Broncos advanced to face Benkelman in the winners bracket Saturday evening.

Wauneta-Palisade fell to the losers bracket with a 1-0 defeat.

Both teams went 1-2-3 in the first.

Wauneta-Palisade loaded the bases in the top of the second inning but couldn’t manage to plate any runs.

Benkelman’s cleanup hitter led off with a home run in the bottom of the second. The home team advanced runners to second and third before Rector and the defense retired the next three.

The Broncos got one on base in each of the next three innings, but couldn’t even the score.

Following the loss Wauneta-Palisade faced Atwood, Kan. The Broncos lost 9-3 in the elimination game.

Each team scored one in the first inning and two in the second.

Harchelroad crossed the plate in the first and Lee and Evan Nordhausen scored in the second.

Despite both teams having runners on first and second both teams went scoreless in the third inning.

Atwood scored its first four batters in the fourth and had the bases loaded before Wauneta-Palisade recorded three consecutive outs.

Another two Atwood runs in the fifth sealed the game.

Ben Anderjaska and Harchelroad pitched for the Broncos.

Wauneta-Palisade entered the tournament 3-3 and finishes the season 4-5.
