Families of the children of August Vlasin held a reunion at a park in Denver July 6 with 150 in attendance. Attending from here were Ed and Anna Belle Vapenik, Wayne and Marie Smith, Kenny and Barb Smith and Dotty Bartels.

Wheeler Ranch hosted an after harvest supper at the Palisade Cafe Friday with Wesley and Marjorie Wheeler, Rod and Joy Wheeler, A.J. and Ann Knickerbocker, Ray and Donna Swanson, Matt Plunkett, Josh Hoffman and Marty and Renee Wheeler and Tommy, grandson of Katie and Tom Weigel attending.

Eunice Bodeman and Judy Polly attended the birthday dinner at the Senior Center Wednesday. Eunice observed her 89th birthday on the 17th.

Veleta Sutherland spent Sunday to Friday with Judy and Rudy Evers. Anita and Mert Smith of Seward came on Monday.

Ethel Louch had Sunday dinner with Evelyn Salyer and her daughter, Jan, and Allen Livingstone and Ben of Cold Lake, Canada.

Deanna Schutte, Judy and Gary Malone of Palisade and Michelle and Caine McCormick, Danny, Shania and Tristan of Imperial had dinner in Imperial Sunday for an early celebration for Harley and Dessa Phares’ 65th wedding anniversary. Following dinner, Deanna, Judy and Gary and their parents returned to Heritage of Wauneta for a specially decorated cake and iced tea, joined by Jenene Smith and a few friends.

Ila Widger and Beryl Knotwell presented the program, “Hidden in Plain View” on the underground railroad with a video and quilt blocks to demonstrate the story at the Crazy Quilt Guild in Imperial Saturday. Attending also were Nola Straub and Orpha Maris.

July 16, 1987

Swimming lessons began at the Wauneta pool Monday with 145 swimmer registering.

Attending junior high cheerleading camp at Kearney Saturday were Renelle Christner, Angi Roschewski, Sarah Haarberg, Theresa Barger and Jyl Applegarth, accompanied by Sharla Roschewski. Nan Malcolm, Karen Christner, René Maris, Jayden and Randi also attended.

Mark and Kirk Kelcher of Dallas, Texas, were houseguests of grandparents, Vic and Kathleen Haarberg, going on to visit Brenda Pfeiffer and family in Omaha.

Elsie Becker and daughters, Doris Craig of Wiggins, Colo., and Evelyn Madison of Corvallis, Ore., returned Thursday after attending a Becker reunion held in the yard of the farm home of Alvie and Jeanette Kirby at Plainfield, Iowa, with over 50 families attending..

Mr. and Mrs. Herman Bley hosted a dinner Sunday for his father, Jacob Bley, on his 92nd birthday. Other families attending were Alvin and Nadene Bley, Ervin and Elaine Bley, Alvin and Lois Bley and grandson Terry Bley.

Mr. and Mrs. Bill Stransky and Dorothy Vlasin, all of Madrid were Sunday visitors of the ladies’ aunts, Agnes Burham and Opal Kerchal.

July 12, 1962

Near perfect weather for the 1962 wheat harvest! Yields varied from 20 to 45 bushels. Junior Ough delivered the first load to the Krotter Elevator July 5; Albert Doetker brought in the first load to the Farmers Cooperative Exchange July 4.

The Village budget was set at $29,100 for the coming year - $400 more than required last year with increases of $200 each for insurance and the fire maintenance fund.

Mrs. Florence (Wiley) Byng of Lewiston, Idaho, daughter of former village marshal, Les Wiley, visited her hometown of Wauneta for the first time in many years. She was a guest of Mr. and Mrs. John Green.

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Meyer and Mike of San Diego, Calif., and Mrs. Marie Ackzinger of Greeley, Colo., and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Haarberg visited Tuesday evening in the Dick Nordhausen home.

Mrs. Gail Rowley and daughters and Mr. and Mrs. Bud Weiss and girls surprised their mother, Mrs. Dan West, on her birthday July 9, enjoying a beautifully decorated cake and ice cream and gifts.

Those enjoying a picnic at the lake July 4 were Mr. and Mrs. Dolan Carter, Mr. and Mrs. Amil Hanson of Madrid, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Large, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kennedy, Lela Marie Kennedy and Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Teply and family of Champion.

75 years ago this week

July 14, 1937

Wauneta will soon have paved streets, this decided at the Board of Trustees meeting July 6. Paving of main street from extreme north end to railroad tracks 62 feet wide and Cox filling station to highway, bank corner to highway, Equity corner to highway and hotel corner east to river bridge 40 feet wide. Estimated cost: $2600.

Wheat pouring into local elevators - Henry Haarberg brought in the first load last Friday which averaged 61 and 62 lbs. and averaged 43 bushels to the acre. The wheat brought $1.07. Wednesday local markets were paying $1.10.

Mrs. Leon Athey is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Hahn, in Hamlet.

Mrs. Lloyd Ough and Mrs. Bert Dimick went to Rock Creek Saturday night and were joined Sunday by Bert and Lloyd and Junior for some good fishing.

Mr. and Mrs. T.L. Darnell of Enders were Friday evening supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Ketler.

Clara and Vearl Kitt, Emma Dettmer, Nervie and Tom Downey spent the 4th at Steinbeck’s.

Howard Pribbeno came up from McCook and spent a few days visiting friends and relatives.

Miss Edna Kanost is home from Missouri.

Miss Emma Dettmer who has been visiting in the German neighborhood on the south divide left for her home in Kensington, Kan., Friday.
