The Chase County Sheriff’s Department responded to two accidents last Thursday, one involving an injury.
The first accident occurred about 11 a.m. near the state line. Sheriff Kevin Mueller said 17-year-old Brendon Berry of Grant, driving a ‘93 Ford Ranger, ran a stop sign and pulled onto Hwy. 6 from County Road 742 in front of a semi-truck.
The ‘93 Peterbilt, driven by Jeffrey Vincent of Atwood, Kan., swerved to avoid hitting Berry and ran off the highway, landing on its side in a ditch.
The load of feed being hauled spilled, requiring a road grader to clean it from the highway.
Mueller said there were no injuries and no citations issued.
The second accident occurred about 10:45 that night. The Sheriff’s Department said 19-year-old Sam Blum of Wauneta was driving a ‘94 Ford Tempo on 347 Ave. seven miles north of Wauneta. His mother, Marian Blum, 51, also of Wauneta, was following in a ‘05 Chevy Cobalt.
The lead vehicle swerved to avoid a fallen tree in the road and pulled over. Marian Blum hit the tree and then hit the rear of the first vehicle.
She was transported to the Chase County Hospital. She was also charged with DUI pending blood results, the Sheriff’s Department said.
A 7-year-old passenger in her car was not at the scene when the Sheriff’s Department responded.
Seat belts were reportedly not in use.
Sam Blum was given a pending citation for no registration.
Both vehicles were a total loss, the Sheriff’s Department said.
