Softball season wraps up with tournaments in Wauneta PDF Print E-mail

Saturday marked the end of the 2012 softball season with B and C team tournaments in Wauneta.

Each group played a three-team round robin tournament.

The C team tournament consisted of Wauneta-Palisade, Benkelman and Atwood, Kan.

Imperial, Atwood and Wauneta-Palisade made up the B team trio.

The Wauneta-Palisade C team opened with a 7-1 loss to Benkelman.

After hitting a single in the third inning, pitcher Ellie Lee scored Wauneta-Palisade’s lone run on a single by Kenna Blackman.

Benkelman picked up three runs on a single by Taryn Burrell and three more off a home run by Emily Jones.

The Lady Broncos used 14 players in the contest and got hits from Cameo Rector, Faith Simpson, Lee and Blackman.

Lee struck out seven.

Benkelman followed up the win with a defeat of Atwood to clinch the tournament championship.

Wauneta-Palisade and Atwood finished up the C team tournament.

The game was highlighted by Simpson’s two home runs, one to lead off the game and start the second inning.

Behind Lee’s pitching the Lady Broncos’ defense only allowed one runner in three innings. Wauneta-Palisade, meanwhile, had 18 runners and scored 11 runs.

Lee struck out two in two innings of work and Simpson pitched the third inning of the 11-0 win.

Simpson finished with a single to go with her two home runs. She scored three runs and had two RBIs. Cheyenne Cavanaugh had two singles and two RBIs. Michaela Dukes had a single and double. Rector reached base twice and scored three runs.

The Wauneta-Palisade C team finished the season with a 5-1 record, its only loss of the season came in the first game of the tournament.

Teams from Atwood and Imperial faced Wauneta-Palisade in the older B division.

Wauneta-Palisade and Atwood squared off in the first game of the B tournament.

The home team, 3-3 heading into the tournament, put four on the board after holding Atwood scoreless in the top of the first.

Atwood batted 11 in the second and held the Lady Broncos to one in the second to take the lead 6-5.

Wauenta-Palisade gave up another seven runs in the top of the third before the bats came alive in the bottom of the inning. Wauneta-Palisade batted around and scored 12 runs before its first out.

The Lady Broncos went on to score 14 in the inning and another eight in the fourth while holding Atwood to eight in the fourth.

Wauneta-Palisade took home the 27-21 win.

Jonee Maris, Tailor Lee, Sydnee Harchelroad, Brianna Einspahr, Hannah Nordhausen and Brooklyn Nordhausen all reached base four times.

Einspahr and Emma Skelton each had four RBIs. T. Lee and B. Nordhausen each added three RBIs.

Everyone on the team scored at least three runs.

Imperial and Atwood squared off in the second game of the round robin tournament.

Imperial scored in the bottom of the fifth to pick up the 9-8 win.

Wauneta-Palisade and Imperial faced off in the final game of the hot day.

Imperial picked up the tournament championship with a 22-0 win over the hosts.

Wauneta-Palisade couldn’t muster any offense in the contest. The Lady Broncos managed only one baserunner in the game.

Imperial scored 13 in the first inning, including a grand slam by Ally Vrbas.

The Longhorns added another eight in the second inning of the three inning contest.

The Wauneta-Palisade pitchers struggled, walking in four runs, allowing three runs on pass pitches and one run when the batter was hit by a pitch.

Kuhlmann carried the pitching duties for Imperial, walking two and striking out three.

Kacia Smith, Vrbas, Kuhlmann and Naomi Harmon each scored three runs.

Vrbas, Harmon and Abbie Vetter reached base safely four times.
