Jacob Maris’ personal record and 12th place finish in the 1600 meter run was the bright spot for the Wauneta-Palisade Broncos’ trip to the state track meet.
Runnng with the pack, Maris’ time of 4:48.857 was nearly four seconds faster than his time at districts. District champion Austin Blume finished third and district runner-up Garrett Perlinger was sixth.
Hannah Nordhausen kicked off the meet in the discus Friday morning. Nordhausen failed to make finals with a throw of 89’8”.
Also competing Friday, Abbie Fanning hit the track in the morning for the 400 meter dash. Running against the Class D runner up, Ashley Heine of Wynot, Fanning finished third in her heat with a time of 1:02.095.
Fanning ran the 800 meters Saturday. Her time of 2:38.214 was four seconds slower than her time at districts.
The girls 1600 meter relay team of Emma Skelton, Sydnee Harchelroad, Leiauna Alberts and Fanning improved on their districts time. Running in heat one the quartet came in at 4:22.022.
Coach Dawn Doetker expects the trip to Omaha to be a learning experience.
“What a great experience for our team to have the opportunity to represent our school and run at Burke Stadium with the best of the best,” said Doetker. “It is an honor to compete there. Our team did the best that they could and should be very proud of themselves.”
