The Nebraska Department of Roads is planning to resurface 10 miles of Highway 6 beginning in August.
Construction will begin at S15A at the corner of Highway 6 and Broadway Street and continue east to Enders Lake Golf Course, according to Kurt Vosburg, District Engineer for the Nebraska Department of Roads.
At the same time, the portion of Highway 61 between the Highway 6-61 junction and East 12th Street will also be resurfaced.
Vosburg said Simon Contractors, a Subsidiary of Cheyenne, Wyo., and North Platte has been contracted for the work.
The company will mill off one and one-half inches of the asphalt and replace it with two inches of asphalt on both lanes and the shoulders.
“That will take care of some things that are showing up on the road,” he said, adding that the road will “gain a little structure.”
At the junction of Highway 6-61 pavement markings for traffic islands will also be restored.
The cost of the project is $2,398,184, he said. Work is tentatively expected to begin Aug. 20, and will take a little over two months.
Vosburg said the Department of Roads figures it will take about 40 working days to complete the project, with 20 working days scheduled in every month.
The last time this particular stretch of highway was resurfaced, he said, was 1997.
