The route is set and registration is now open for the 2012 Cornhusker State Games Torch Run.
And, as in most of its previous years, the Torch Run will again pass through Imperial and Wauneta on its way to Lincoln, site of the annual Cornhusker State Games in July.
This year, the torch will be through Chase County June 11-12. It will “spend the night” June 11 in Imperial with an early morning start June 12.
Runners are being recruited in this area to help complete the route that covers more than 1,100 miles of Nebraska highways. People can run a mile or more, and all participants get a Games T-shirt.
People interested in running a leg in this area can sign up by contacting the Cornhusker State Games office at 402-471-2544.
The Torch Run, sponsored by the Nebraska National Guard, starts June 6 west of Morrill.
The Scottsbluff High School boys’ basketball team, which won a state championship this year for the first time in 57 years, will make up the honorary first runners, according to Games officials.
The Torch run, in the tradition of the Olympic Games, serves as an awareness mechanism for the 28th annual Cornhusker State Games, taking place July 20-29.
The Games feature competition in more than 60 sports for an expected 12,000 athletes of all ages and abilities.
Online registration for the Games is also available at cornhuskerstategames.com.
