W-P sixth grade students designed castles as part of their studies of medieval Europe. Students’ castles were based off real castles in Europe. For the past five or six years Marilyn Kunkel’s sixth grade students have been able to get “up close and personal” with one of Europe’s medieval castles.
Each year during medieval studies the students choose a castle from medieval Europe, research the castle, write a report, develop a PowerPoint presentation and then they are given the opportunity to build a model of their castle.
Most parts of the multi-faceted project are done individually but the castle-building activity can be a family project.
Kunkel explained that the castles project involves instruction from four different W-P educators. Kunkel organizes the sixth grade project. While completing the projects W-P librarian Printha Fox shows students how to research their castles and complete the reference pages for their report. Keyboarding teacher Joyce Spickelmier teaches students the correct form for their reports. Teachers aide Evelyn Schluckebier helped students with their report writing and this year she helped a student build a castle.
Once their report is complete students prepare a PowerPoint presentation about their castle and present it to the fifth grade class to help them prepare for their project during the next year.
