The Wauneta-Palisade girls’ basketball team members knew they would have their hands full Friday against Lincoln Journal Star #7 Ansley. With the exception of the second quarter, Wauneta-Palisade held their own against the 22-2 Lady Warriors ultimately falling 59-28.
Ansley scored the opening basket of the game but the Lady Broncos quickly answered when Tailor Lee found Sheyla Christner for two. Wauneta-Palisade briefly took the lead on their next possession on a Lee basket with an assist from Emma Skelton. Ansley opened up a 7-4 lead with two baskets and a free throw until Brooklyn Nordhausen grabbed an offensive rebound and made a bucket. The Lady Warriors closed the quarter with a basket to make it 9-6 at the end of the first eight minutes.
The second quarter opened with Skelton tying the game with a three-pointer on the opening possession. Wauneta-Palisade could only manage one more basket, another three by Skelton off an assist from Abbie Fanning, as Ansley outscored the Lady Broncos 30-6 in the quarter.
Wauneta-Palisade struggled with the Lady Warriors’ press and Ansley hit the boards hard throughout the game, most evident in the second quarter, outrebounding Wauneta-Palisade 40 to 21 in the game. The Lady Warriors also made all eight of their free throw attempts in the quarter.
Coming out of intermission down 39-12, the Lady Broncos were only outscored by four in the second half, 20-16. Wauneta-Palisade got baskets from Christner and Lee off an assist from Nordhausen. Skelton found Nordhausen who was fouled and completed a conventional three point play. With less than a minute in the third quarter Jonee Maris grabbed a steal and made a layup to make it 49-27 heading into the final quarter of the Lady Broncos’ season.
Nordhausen added another basket in the fourth to give her a game high seven points for Wauneta-Palisade. Brianna Einspahr made three-of-four free throws and Cassidy Rathe wrapped up scoring with a basket late.
Skelton finished the game with six points. Lee and Christner added four points each. Lee had three blocks. Einspahr and Rathe rounded out scoring with three and two points, respectively. Wauneta-Palisade made four-of-11 from the charity stripe.
Siera Rohde led Ansley with 20 points. Katie Drake added 18. The Lady Warriors made 12-of-20 free throws.
The Lady Broncos finish their season with a 13-10 record.
