It was an up-and-down type of night for the Wauneta-Palisade boys basketball team against Dundy County - Stratton Friday. The team went from ahead by 10 in the third quarter to down by seven in the fourth before closing the game on a 26-13 run. Behind stellar free throw shooting the team nailed down its 11th win of the season 62-56.

Fans at the final home game for seniors Reese West and Bo Fanning saw a different look from Coach Dave Kuhlen’s Broncos. Kuhlen didn’t go with his typical look at point guard and the adjustment seemed to pay off.

The game was nip-and-tuck throughout the first quarter. Logan Bischoff scored the Broncos’ first six points. Fanning’s first basket opened up an 8-4 lead over the Tigers, but a three-pointer by Bischoff was all the Broncos could muster over the final 5:20 of the quarter. DCS went on a 10-3 run to pull ahead 14-11, heading into the second.

The Tigers tried to pick up the pace early in the quarter. After an early basket by DCS, the Wauneta-Palisade defense put the clamps on and only gave up four more points heading into intermission. Back-to-back baskets by Jack McGraw and Fanning, plus one free throw by Fanning, tied the game at 16. Following a basket by Bischoff, the Tigers tied the game again only to watch the Broncos take a seven-point lead into halftime.

Bischoff scored again off an assist from Wes Anderjaska and Hayden Pollmann knocked down a three-pointer and then a two-pointer with help from Bischoff. Two free throws by Bischoff gave the Broncos a 27-20 lead.

Wauneta-Palisade extended its lead to 10 in the first minute of the second half with a bucket by Pollmann and two free throw by Bischoff. But the Broncos struggled against the Dundy Co.-Stratton press and the Tigers cut the lead to three before Bischoff found McGraw for a basket. The Broncos fell behind by six until Fanning hit both ends of a one-and-one to bring Wauneta-Palisade to within four heading into the fourth.

While the Broncos were only able to make four baskets over the final eight minutes, the team stepped it up at the free throw line. The Broncos made 19-of-20 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter. In the final stanza Bischoff went to the line 12 times and converted 11. Anderjaska made all four of his attempts and Pollmann was 2-for-2. Fanning also made both of his attempts before fouling out with 6:38 left in the contest. Wauneta-Palisade made 25-of-35 attempts in the game compared to DCS’s nine makes in 16 tries. Bischoff hit 14/17 in the contest, while Anderjaska finished 4/6 and Fanning 5/5.

Bischoff led all scorers with 31 points. Dundy County Stratton’s Joe Rettele followed close behind with 27.

For the Broncos, Pollmann also finished in double figures with eleven points. Fanning added nine and Anderjaska seven points, respectively. McGraw rounded out scoring with four points.

The Broncos take a two game win streak into Subdistrict action. Wauneta-Palisade plays Medicine Valley in Imperial Tuesday. Tip time is set for 6:30 following the Hayes Center-Wallace/Maywood game. With a win the Broncos will play at 6:00 Thursday.
