The Wauneta Breeze

The RPAC Tournament ended with a whimper for the Wauneta-Palisade boys basketball team.

For the second time in five days the Broncos faced off against the Paxton Tigers. Playing in Benkelman Tuesday for the second round of the RPAC tournament the outcome was still the same. In a closer contest, Wauneta-Palisade was defeated 69-48.

The Broncos were cold right from the start. While a lot of misses led to a lot of offensive rebounds, the team couldn’t make a bucket. Jack McGraw got Wauneta-Palisade on the board with a free throw at the five minute mark of the first quarter.  The team got baskets from Connor Kayton and Hayden Pollmann to round out the initial eight minutes with the score 15-5.

Wauneta-Palisade played even with the Tigers for the first three minutes of the second quarter, but Paxton went on an 11-2 run to open up a 32-15 halftime lead.

While the Broncos’ offense continued to improve each quarter, a big third quarter by the Tigers helped insure the win. Paxton came out after half time and put 25 points up in the third quarter. Wauneta-Palisade played tough after intermission and was only outscored by four in the half. Kayton, Pollmann and Bo Fanning each scored four points in the third quarter. Thirteen of the teams 17 fourth quarter points came at the free throw line. The Broncos were 13/19 from the charity stripe in the quarter.

Despite 33 second half points, Wauneta-Palisade fell 69-48.

Bischoff and Kayton finished in double figures for Wauneta-Palisade with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Cody Corfield was hot again for the Tigers. Corfield burned the Broncos for 26 points.

Wauneta-Palisade had an excellent game from the charity stripe. The Broncos made16-of-25 free throws for the game. Paxton was seven-for-18.

After the defeat Tuesday, the team traveled to Paxton Friday to take on the Hayes Center Cardinals.

Despite trailing 11-10 after the opening quarter, the Broncos headed into halftime up 26-15. Bischoff scored ten first half points and Pollmann chipped in nine during the first 16 minutes.

The Cardinals came out hot after intermission. Hayes Center put 18 points on the board to Wauneta-Palisade’s 11. The Broncos still held a 37-33 lead heading into the final stanza, but were outscored 11-3 over the final eight minutes.

Wauneta-Palisade hopes to improve on its 9-8 record when it hosts Medicine Valley on Thursday and travels to Sutherland Friday.
