The Wauneta Breeze

Less than two weeks after an official fundraising effort to save Wauneta’s nursing home was launched, numerous supporters have stepped forward with generous contributions.

This fundraising effort is seeking donations to help the Village of Wauneta raise $150,000 needed to assume ownership and operation of Heritage of Wauneta ahead of a June deadline when Vetter Health Services have stated they will no longer operate the local nursing home.

As of Tuesday morning more than $52,000 had been received, putting the fundraising effort one-third of the way to its baseline goal of $150,000 to help cover the total $800,000 cost of the Village of Wauneta to purchasing the facility and bed licenses as well as covering the first month of operating expenses.

Of that $800,000, $500,000 is coming from the sale of facility revenue bonds and $150,000 from Village of Wauneta reserves, leaving $150,000 to be raised through tax-deductible donations.

Letters have gone out seeking support for the project and calls made asking for donations to help the town raise a minimum of $150,000. Time is of the essence, note Wauneta Village Board members and nursing home committee volunteers, with late February the target date to have funds in place to proceed with the transaction.

Donations have ranged in size from $20 to $10,000, with committee expressing their appreciation for all contributions, noting that no donation is too small or too large. So far most contributions have been received directly at the Village Office, but online contributions are also starting to trickle in. A web site — www.savewaunetanursinghome.com — has been established to keep supporters updated on the progress of local efforts and to accept credit card donations via PayPal.

These nursing home donations will be deposited in a special account established at Valley Bank and Trust in Wauneta.

Those wishing to make a donation can mail their checks to: Village of Wauneta, ATTN: Save Wauneta Nursing Home, P.O. Box 95, Wauneta, NE 69045.

Checks should be made out to the Village of Wauneta, with “Heritage” or “Nursing Home” written on the check’s memo line.

Once the funds have been raised and the sale completed community members are urged to help promote the Wauneta nursing home and to consider utilizing the facility for their own health-care and long-term residency needs.

If for some reason the negotiated purchase agreement is not finalized, all donations will be returned to the donors.
