The Wauneta-Palisade girls basketball team split games last week. The Lady Broncos fell at home to Perkins Co. Friday night 49-27 and defeated Garden Co. 52-36 in Oshkosh Saturday.

The Lady Broncos started off on the right foot against Perkins Co. when Abbie Fanning scored on the Lady Broncos’ first possession. But Wauneta-Palisade struggled to score for the next three minutes until a conventional three-point play by Sheyla Christner tied the game at five.

Fanning gave Wauneta-Palisade the lead on a coast-to-coast layup. After two Perkins Co. baskets, Tailor Lee’s free throw made the score 8-9 at the end of the first quarter.

The teams traded turnovers and missed shots for the first several minutes of the second quarter.

Wauneta-Palisade pulled ahead again with a three-pointer by Sydnee Harchelroad and extended its lead to 13-9 following two free throws by Fanning. Perkins Co. mounted its comeback from the free throw line. The Lady Plainsmen made three consecutive shots from the charity stripe to pull within one. A three-pointer put Perkins Co. up by two, but Christner tied the game 15-15 off an assist from Fanning. Perkins Co. added three free throws to Wauneta-Palisade’s one to end the half with a 20-16 Perkins Co. lead.

After hanging around for the first 16 minutes, the Lady Broncos couldn’t keep up in the third quarter. Tanya Metcalf for Perkins Co. made three baskets to start the half. Perkins Co. opened up a 28-16 lead before Wauneta-Palisade could get back on the board. A free throw by Christner and a basket by Fanning were all the offense the Lady Broncos could muster as they were outscored 20-3 in the third quarter.

Wauneta-Palisade stuck with the Lady Plainsmen in the final eight minutes. Brooklyn Nordhausen scored the team’s first five points in the fourth. Emma Skelton rounded out the Lady Broncos’ scoring with a three-pointer. Although only outscored by one in the fourth quarter, the Lady Broncos lost 49-27.

Christner led Wauneta-Palisade with eight points. Fanning added six.

Lee pulled down nine rebounds to lead the team. Nordhausen dished out four assists.

Metcalf finished with 17 for Perkins Co.

Lady Broncs get sixth win

The Lady Bronco offense got going Saturday night at Garden Co. behind the efforts of Christner and Lee. Each scored 17 points against the Eagles’ zone en route to a 52-36 win. Lee hit three three-pointers.

Coach Lauhead credited Nordhausen with a nice job on the boards, notching 11, and earned a double-double with 10 points.

“Everyone put out a good effort,” said Lauhead.

The Lady Broncos outscored Garden Co. 26-18 in each half.

Christner and Fanning each grabbed six rebounds. Lee had nine assists, four steals and two blocked shots.

At 6-7, Wauneta-Palisade will travel to RPAC opponent Paxton, 6-6, Thursday. The Lady Broncos face Wallace Saturday in Trenton for the first round of the RPAC Tournament. Game time is set for 5 p.m. MT/6 p.m. CT.
