The Wauneta Breeze
The Lady Broncos kicked off varsity basketball action at home Friday night with a 50-28 win over South Platte. The visiting school from Big Springs and Brule came in to the contest with a 2-2 record.
Wauneta-Palisade opened up a quick 4-0 lead in the first minute of the game. Jonee Maris’ offensive rebound and bucket and a wide-open basket by Tailor Lee set the tone for the game.
With both teams pressing they traded turnovers. Scoring picked up again with a long pass from Abbie Fanning to Lee for a layup. Following a South Platte basket, Sheyla Christner scored to make the score 8-2 with just under six minutes in the first quarter.
Lee scored six more points in the quarter and Christner added a free throw rounding out scoring for the Lady Broncos in the quarter.
South Platte’s leading scorer, Kailan Cole who finished with nine points, hit a bucket as the buzzer sounded to make the score 15-9.
The Lady Broncos were first on the board in the second with two Christner baskets.
“We played a straight man defense the second half in the South Platte game, and picked them up at half court, but sagged off more than in the first half because they had more quickness and speed at some positions,” noted WP Coach Roger Lauhead.
The Lady Knights used that speed to break through the WP press for a lay-up to make it 19-11. Maris scored again off an inbounds play and Fanning had two steals in a row, but couldn’t convert and the score stood at 21-11 with five minutes left in the second.
A South Platte offensive rebound led to a basket and another lay-up off the press break narrowed the Lady Bronco lead to 21-15.
Christner continued to play well as her offensive rebound and basket and two free throws put Wauneta-Palisade up by ten with 2:30 left in the half.
WP fouls and South Platte free throws kept the Lady Knights in the game and made it close heading into half time. The Lady Knights hit four of six free throws and a ten point lead with 1:50 in the second quarter shrunk to a 27-23 Bronco lead at halftime.
The third quarter opened with a South Platte steal and layup, but the Lady Broncos put clamps on and only allowed the visitors a free throw in the rest of the quarter and one basket the rest of the game. WP scored 23 points in the second half, starting with a Brooklyn Nordhausen basket off a nice assist from Lee.
Lee scored again off an offensive rebound and then off an assist from Emma Skelton. Lee scored for the third consecutive time off a full court pass for a layup and the Lady Broncos were up 38-25.
After a South Platte free throw Fanning scored and then drew a charge to get the ball back. Fanning hit another shot then forced a turnover and made another bucket to make it 44-26 at the end of the third. The teams traded turnovers to start the fourth quarter and Fanning continued her hot streak by blocking a South Platte layup.
Christner collected another offensive rebound and was fouled on the put back. Her free throw made the score 45-26. Fanning added a bucket and free throw. A Sydnee Harchelroad pass to Brianna Einspahr for a layup rounded out the game, a 50-28 win for the Broncs.
Lee led the Lady Broncos with 17, hitting eight of 14 from the floor. Christner was right behind with 15. Fanning added nine. Lee also led Wauneta-Palisade with nine rebounds. Christner collected six boards. Fanning had five steals and three assists to lead the team.
South Platte was led by Cole with nine. Adalida Dickmander scored five points.
The win improved Wauneta-Palisade to 2-2. The Broncos will participate in the Brady Tournament and Cambridge Tournament over Christmas break.

Sarah Cox carried the load for Hayes Center making two three pointers and finishing the quarter with eight points. Sheyla Christner scored the final three points of the quarter for the Lady Broncos, giving WP a 14-10 lead.

Fanning added to the Lady Broncos point total after halftime, hitting a three pointer. After a Nordhausen free throw Fanning added another basket. Christner hit a free throw and a bucket to round out Wauneta-Palisade’s scoring in the third. The Lady Broncos remained ahead 28-24 after allowing Hayes Center to score only one basket in the quarter.
The Cardinals did make four of seven free throws.
The Lady Broncs scored 18 points in the final quarter, including nine free throws. Fanning made another three pointer and a two-point basket and Christner made two baskets. Larissa Wach and Whitney Rosno each made three pointers for the Cardinals, but it was not enough and Wauneta-Palisade won by 12.
Large and Haley Tyan both fouled out for Hayes Center. Rosno and Annie Deaver each finished with four fouls as the Cardinals racked up 25 fouls in the contest. B. Nordhausen fouled out for Wauneta-Palisade and Christner had four fouls.
Christner and Fanning each finished with 15 points. Skelton scored 11. Nordhausen added five points. Fanning was 5-of-12 from the charity stripe, all in the fourth quarter, while Christner hit 5-of-11. Skelton made five of her seven free throw attempts.
