South Platte was outmatched right from the opening tip Friday night, falling to host Wauneta-Palisade 64-19.
Jacob Maris hit a three pointer on the Broncos first possession, but both teams failed to find a rhythm early on. With 4:30 minutes left in the first quarter the score was 6-2 following a Conner Kayton assist to Logan Bischoff. Bischoff was fouled on the play and made his free throw.
The Bronco press gave the visitors fits and when the Knights did set up on offense they couldn’t convert.
Bischoff scored six straight points before another Maris three broke his streak.
A three pointer and offensive rebound for a basket by Kayton rounded out first quarter scoring, the home team up 19-6.
Both teams came out cold in the second quarter. A Maris steal led to a Bo Fanning basket to get the Broncos back on track.
The good defense continued as a steal by Reese West led to a South Platte foul on Bo Fanning. The WP senior converted one free throw and extended the home team’s lead to 24-6.
The Bronco press continued to cause turnovers for South Platte. A Jack McGraw steal led to a West basket with the assist coming from Kayton.
Bischoff and Maris added baskets and the teams traded turnovers and missed baskets until a South Platte layup by Terryl Peterman ended the half with the score 30-10.
The teams traded baskets to start the third quarter. Bischoff scored for the Broncos and South Platte broke the Wauneta-Palisade press for a basket by Sky Waschoff.
Baskets by McGraw and Bischoff gave the Broncos a 38-14 lead. After a Kayton free throw and Bischoff basket, Hayden Pollmann’s three-pointer made it 44-14 at the end of the third quarter.
Fanning had a good fourth quarter scoring six consecutive points for the Broncos. Fanning finished with eight in the quarter and 11 on the night. Wes Anderjaska came in late to the game and nailed a three pointer. Landon Jutten and Weyland Davis each scored baskets late as the Broncos cruised to a 64-19 win.
Bischoff led the Broncos with 18 points. Kayton added nine points. Maris scored eight points. The Broncos hit 5-of-9 free throws.
South Platte, winless on the season, was led by John McClung and Sky Waychoff with six points each.
The win moved Wauneta-Palisade to 3-1 heading into the Hayes Center game.
