The Wauneta-Palisade boys travelled to Cambridge Friday and pulled out a rugged 10-point win over the Trojans, 55-45.
Fouls and turnovers were the name of the game right from the tip off. Cambridge won the jump but immediately gave the ball away. Reese West got the steal and the lay-up to start the scoring in the contest.
Both teams committed multiple turnovers and missed shots as they struggled to get their offenses going. Coach Dave Kuhlen commented, “We have a lot of areas to address right now, but the team seems very eager to get better.”
Offensive rebounds gave Cambridge a 8-4 lead, but two Hayden Pollmann free throws and a put back by Logan Bischoff as time expired in the first quarter tied the game at 8-8.
The Broncos fell behind early in the second quarter. Bischoff hit two free throws to tie the game at 12 with five minutes left in the second quarter. A Cambridge turnover and Wauneta-Palisade basket put the Broncos ahead and they never trailed again. The Broncos headed into half time with a 22-17 lead.
Scoring picked up in the third quarter. The Broncos held a 28-21 lead with three minutes gone in the half. A free throw and basket by Bischoff and two Pollmann lay-ups helped the Broncos extend their lead to 39-30 at the end of the third.
Conner Kayton’s basket started the scoring in the fourth quarter for the Broncos. West’s assist to Bischoff extended the Bronco lead. Pollmann hit two free throws to put Wauneta-Palisade up by ten, 47-37. After a time out called by Kuhlen, the Broncos came out and spread the court to run time off the clock.
Cambridge whittled away at the Bronco lead pulling to 48-43 with 1:06 left.
“One area to improve is to do a better job of finishing games, with better decision-making, better free throw shooting, and better ball handling,” noted Kuhlen.
The Broncos did a good job of keeping their composure and never let the Trojans get closer than five. Bischoff was on the receiving end of a full court pass for a lay-up and was fouled. His free throw made it 51-43.
With 24 seconds left the Broncos showed nice touch, breaking the Cambridge press with unselfish passing. West passed the ball to Bischoff who fed Pollmann for a lay-up and foul. The free throw was the final point of the game, a 55-45 Bronco win, dropping Cambridge to 2-3 on the season.
Bischoff led the Broncos in scoring with 22. Pollmann added 16. Kayton and West scored 6 each. Fanning scored three points and Jacob Maris netted two points. WP was 16 of 24 from the free throw line. Pollmann was 8 of 9 at the line.
Score by quarters:
WP 8 14 17 16 55
Cambridge 8 9 13 15 45
