Senior captains Bo Fanning and Reese West started their first season without last year’s seniors, Chris Bartels, Drew Harris and Ricky Martin. The Broncos had a tough first game against the Brady Eagles, falling to the Eagles in a close-fought game, 46-39.
Getting the opening tip-off, Logan Bischoff and teammates worked against the fast paced, high pressure defense of the Eagles.
Both teams played take away and took second chance opportunities with the Broncos up 10-8 at the end of the first quarter.
Early Bronco foul trouble had Coach Dave Kuhlen putting in substitutes for both Bischoff and Fanning.
Hayden Pollmann kept the scoring going by hitting a three pointer after Jacob Maris drilled two short jumpers.
Fouls are common when you play in-your-face defense as Kuhlen was quoted last year.
The third quarter ended with the Broncos down 27-28.
While trading baskets and the play getting nasty, the Eagles called a time-out with 4:26 left in the fourth quarter with the score tied at 37-37.
After 26 seconds into play Bischoff was called for his fifth foul and the Broncos lost their leading scorer for the night.
Bischoff finished with 16 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots.
Pollmann scored seven points and had two rebounds.
Fanning and Maris both ended with four points each.
The Broncos’ next game is Friday Dec. 9, at Cambridge against the Trojans whom the Broncos beat last year, 63-33.
Bronco JV Boys beat Brady
Coach Kuhlen’s JV team started the 2011-12 season with their first win.
Playing with three juniors, three sophomores and one freshman, Kuhlen’s coaching of pressure defense and opportunity offense proved successful for a 28-21 win. Jacob Maris led the scoring with eight points, Wes Anderjaska scored six points and Weylin Davis, Lorenzo Cavanaugh and Hayden Pollmann each scored four points.
