The stage is set, period costumes from the late 1800s are being stitched together, and lines mastered as the Wauneta-Palisade one-act team gets ready to launch a month-long run of performances.
“The Penny Dreadfuls” is the title of this year’s competition piece, with WP English and drama teacher Liz Noler, assisted by Teresa Hayes, guiding her cast of 23 and crew of 12.
The one-act team will deliver their first public performance when they host the annual Dessert Theatre on Tuesday, Nov. 8, beginning at 7 p.m. MT/8 p.m. CT. Tickets are $4 if purchased in advance or $6 at the door. Advance tickets can be purchased from one-act cast and crew members or at the school office in Wauneta. All WP students will be admitted free of charge.
Ahead of next week’s Dessert Theatre, the team will give a dress rehearsal performance during school Friday, giving WP students and staff an early preview.
Noler describes “The Penny Dreadfuls” as a “dark comedy.”
In a brief synopsis the play is summarized as a story of orphans and runaways who steal for the conniving professor, with their loot ending up at a pawn shop run by three despicable ladies. Business had been very profitable until the mysterious Mad Aggie appears on the scene, seeking revenge. And revenge was never sweeter!
First, the professor gets a bottle of potion he believes will cure his baldness. It does, with hair growing everywhere.
Then Scuttlebutt, the leader of the Penny Dreadfuls, gets arrested. Add to this mix the corrupt Officer Culver and the professor’s demanding girlfriend, leaving the professor ready to pull his hair out. All of it! Laughter ensues as the villans get their due.
