Cancer Walk volunteer Stephanie Williams of Wauneta is thrilled with the early numbers coming in ahead of Chase County Hospital’s ALL Cancer Walk coming up in Wauneta Saturday.
As of Tuesday, 132 walkers had already pre-registered — compared to last year’s 98 participants — and more are expected to join the event as last minute registrants on Saturday.
“I am thrilled,” said Williams, who is among the dozens of cancer survivors who will be taking part in the walk and fundraising auction.
All walkers are asked to meet at Wauneta’s Chase County Medical Clinic located at the intersection of N. Tecumseh and Vinita Street in downtown Wauneta Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. to pick up their T-shirts and finalize the registration process.
After their final sign in, walkers will line Tecumseh Avenue south from the medical clinic to the bank corner and Wichita Street west to the school.
At 9 a.m., participating cancer survivors will kick off the day’s events with an honor walk carrying balloons which will be released when they reach the school. This will mark the start of the 5K Cancer Walk.
The route will swing participants west of the school to Railway Street, winding back east to Arapahoe Avenue. From there, walkers will head south to the Wauneta Crossroads parking lot. They will continue east to Bodeman Park Drive near the swimming pool where they will head north to Railway Street and back to Tecumseh Avenue. On Tecumseh they will steer east at the bank corner intersection along Wichita Street to the far east end of Wauneta strolling along Park, Valley and Willow Streets before circling back down Wichita and homestretch to the school.
The 3.2 mile walk is expected to end around 10:15 a.m., with the rest of the goings-on held at the school, in the gym and gym lobby areas. In case of inclement weather Saturday, the gym will be available for walkers.
Cancer survivor Mindi Goings of Waunta will be this year’s featured speaker. She will address the crowd at the school where the Wauneta Chamber is serving a complimentary sloppy joe lunch. Pianist Jeff Schuman of Imperial will provide musical entertainment during the luncheon.
A silent auction of items donated by area businesses and supporters will be held, ending promptly at 11:45 a.m. MT.
In past years this auction has offered a significant fundraising boost for the event.
Williams noted that some fabulous items have been donated for the auction.
This annual fundraising event benefits Chase County and area patients who receive services from Chase County Community Hospital and Clinics who are diagnosed with cancer or who are pursuing cancer prevention.
Cost of registration Saturday morning is $20 with late registrants welcome. Those who can’t participate but would like to support the event are encouraged to sponsor one of the walkers or make a donation to the Cancer Walk.
