Helena’s ‘crazy guys’ awarded parade Grand Prize

Each year at the Chase County Fair parade, the “crazy guys” from Helena Chemical have one of those entries that just makes a person laugh.

It was no different this year, when the former Top Hat Ag LLC crew depicted a scene from the Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom movie, complete with the “mysterious stone.”

But this year, their efforts also garnered Helena Chemical the parade’s Grand Prize.

Judges felt Helena’s efforts portrayed the best entry in efforts to follow the parade’s theme, “Spirit of Adventure.”

It was also the first place entry in the business/professional division.

The Imperial Chamber of Commerce coordinates the parade each year for the fair board. First and second place in each of five divisions received $50 and $30, respectively, in Chamber Bucks.

Helena’s Grand Prize entry also won an additional $75.

Parade Co-chairman Teresa Groff said it was difficult to put a firm number on entries for the Aug. 20 event, but believes it was one of the largest in years. Several of the parade participants choose not to be judged each year, she said, so do not fill out an entry form.

With the number of participants this year, the crowds along the parade route seemed bigger, too, Groff said. Many in the parade said there were very few gaps of people along the route.

Parade Grand Marshal Vilas Smith of Champion and his wife Betty led the parade, pulled in a horse-drawn carriage by Judy Brandt.

And, as usual, the parade participants provided plenty of candy and other items thrown out to the crowds.

The parade passed by a reviewing stand in downtown Imperial where each entry was announced.

Here are the first and second place winners in each of the parade divisions.
