Keagan Haarberg gets a hand on Cheylin’s Ethan Young, slowing him down the 220-pounder enough for Weylin Davis, at right, to finish off the tackle as Donald Hunt, No. 42, moves in to assist. Despite a fierce defensive effort, the badly outnumbered and outsized Broncos fell to the Cougars 40-20 in their season opener. This week the Broncs host Potter-Dix (0-1) Friday night in Wauneta. Kickoff is slated for 6:30 p.m. MT/7:30 p.m. CT.

The Wauneta-Palisade football team started off the season with a disappointing loss, 40-20, to Cheylin, Kan., on a hot muggy, buggy night on their home field last Thursday evening.

Cheylin, taking the opening kickoff, didn’t waste time, marching down the field to score a touchdown and running in the conversion, to put Cheylin up 8-0.

Coach Justin Bernhardt made his local coaching debut, starting with a wide open passing game. Bronco junior Connor Kayton stepped into his quarterback role, assisted by Bo Fanning, Reese West and Keagan Haarberg, all seniors.

Having little success, the Broncos turned the ball over to Cheylin. Both teams continued to exchange the ball without much luck until 4:31 minutes left in the first quarter with a Cheylin interception and scoring which put the Broncos down 14-0.

With the ensuing kickoff taken by hard running Bo Fanning to Cheylin’s 30-yard line and Kayton’s two passes to West and Fanning, the effort put the Broncos on the 10-yard line. Kayton ran the last 10 yards in for the touchdown. The conversion failed, putting the score at 14-6 to end the first quarter.

Bronco quarterback Connor Kayton grinds out yards against a tough Cheylin defense, busting tackles as he gains ground for Wauneta-Palisade. Kayton had 73 yards rushing and 252 yards passing against the Cougars.

Cheylin made the most of their size advantage and their ability to penetrate the WP offensive line and neutralize the Broncos’ running game.

Cheylin seemed to rack up first downs with the greatest ease. They scored for the third time and added another touchdown with 1:18 minutes left in the second quarter. Cheylin ran out the clock with running plays, leading 32-6.

The third quarter had Wauneta-Palisade going 44 yards on two quick passes by Kayton to Fanning and Bischoff, another interception stalled out the Broncos’ forward momentum until Cheylin fumbled the ball back to the Broncos.

Kayton passed to Pollmann for the TD and the conversion by Kayton was good, making it 32-14.

Wauneta-Palisade made strides in the second half, allowing Cheylin into the end zone one more time. Cheylin separated themselves from the Broncos 40-14.

As time was running out, Kayton, Fanning, West and Pollmann put together another scoring TD drive.

The final score was Cheylin 40, Wauneta-Palisade 20.

Another home challenge awaits the Broncos as they meet Potter-Dix (0-1) tomorrow evening (Friday) at 6:30 p.m. MT/7:30 p.m. CT.

Hayden Pollmann goes up high to pull in a touchdown pass from Connor Kayton in the third quarter against Cheylin. Pollmann, a sophomore, had 49 yards receiving in Thursday’s game.

Potter-Dix here Friday night

With a football season generously described as rebuilding, but realistically categorized as rugged, the Broncos will be playing the only team they beat last year.

The Potter-Dix Coyotes will be coming in after their season opening loss to Wallace 21-8.

They were led by their quarterback’s arm. Coach Bernhardt “hopes to put pressure on him.”

The Coyotes list 23 players on the team with six seniors, seven juniors, two sophomores and eight freshmen.

Again W/P will be operating with fewer personnel. Perhaps Mother Nature will help with cooler weather.

The Broncos will be led by quarterback Conner Kayton with receiving and running by Bo Fanning and defense by Keagan Haarberg and a group of hard working players.

Next week the Broncos will travel to Haxtun, Colo., to play the Bulldogs.
