Ted Grimm and Norm Lucas were two men who had much in common and had they been given a chance to know each other would likely have become good friends.
Both men were avid runners, both volunteering numerous hours to put together Wauneta’s annual Yucca Run. And both men have been honored with tribute runs held after their deaths.
This year several of Grimm’s family and friends participated for the first time, some simply walking the 3k and 5k course proudly wearing the 2011 Yucca Run T-shirts acknowledging this year’s tribute to Grimm who died earlier this year.
“There’s no way I would’ve missed this one,” said brother-in-law Steve Haskins later that day.
Wauneta’s Yucca Run kicked off Saturday’s events during Wauneta’s Harvest Festival Celebration on July 30. The event was first started back in 1990 by Norm Lucas, with the rural Wauneta man devoting hours of time to launch an interest in running among his neighbors in southwest Nebraska. Following his death in January 1994 his family and fellow runners hosted a memorial run in his honor during Wauneta’s 1994 Harvest Fest before the event was discontinued.
When Grimm moved to Wauneta he picked up the torch once carried by Lucas, breathing new life into the Yucca Run, a 3 to 5K run which takes runners and walkers up the hill north of Wauneta along Old Highway 6 and past the pastures dotted with yucca plants, making the course not only scenic but challenging.
Grimm helped the event grow to include new participants each year over the past decade and despite health problems continued to be a devoted runner himself up until the time of his death in February.
As time for the Yucca Run drew near, family members of both men wanted to pay tribute to Grimm.
“I am not a runner but decided that since Ted did so much for the community and was such an avid runner, I wanted to do something in memory of him like we did for my dayd” said Norm Lucas’ daughter Laurie Kerchal of Wauneta.
Those family members are also hoping that someone with Ted and Norm’s love of running will step forward to keep the Yucca Run alive.
“If anyone in the community would like to carry on with the Yucca Run in the future, they can contact me,” said Kerchal. “There may be someone out there with a real passion for running who would like to do that.”
Kerchal can be reached at 394-5180.
