Chase County Museum to feature glass washboards this weekend
Your grandmother’s washboard went through many changes over the years, the most noticeable of which was the switch to glass.
During the WWII, wage and price controls as well as not being able to secure metal for the rubbing surface were factors in the switch to using glass for the rubbing surface. The glass washboard became an instant “hit” but died when metal became available again.
Chuck Vette of Wauneta started collecting glass washboards in 1968. His first washboard was his mother’s. Vette’s collection includes approximately 70 washboards, many of which will be on display at the Chase County Museum this Sunday.
Museum hours on Sunday will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
