North/south traffic on Highway 61 over Enders Dam will be detoured on county roads, beginning Wednesday, July 27.

The detour will allow maintenance repairs to be made under the highway bridge over Enders Dam.

Several years ago, the driving surface of the bridge deck was repaired and traffic was detoured then as well.

The detour route will be the same for this project.

For southbound traffic, the detour begins at the Hwys. 6-61 junction at the lake.

Southbound traffic will continue east on Hwy. 6 to 341 Avenue, turning south there. Traffic will travel south for four miles, then turn west on 727 Road, traveling three miles back to Hwy. 61.

For northbound traffic, the detour will begin on 727 Road, following the same route back to the Hwys. 6-61 junction.

$457,832 project

The work being completed underneath the bridge structure will total $457,832. Aspen Construction of Hackensack, Minn., was awarded the contract by the Bureau of Reclamation.

Bob Schieffer, with the Bureau’s Nebraska-Kansas office in Grand Island, said the work will focus on the steel supports under the bridge, along with concrete supports.

He said the work is primarily preventative maintenance. Over the years, some of the steel supports are showing some rust and some of the concrete is deteriorating from road salt applied during winter.

Some concrete will be replaced during the project, as well.

He noted the structural integrity of the bridge remains intact.
