We wish to thank the Wauneta City employees, Dr. Steve Pollmann, the Sheriff’s Department, family and friends and the town of Wauneta for the help and outpouring of concern and support after the vicious attack on our donkey, Scooter.
While some steps have been taken to hopefully insure this will never happen again we still need to ask the community to help with the ongoing process. If anyone sees any dog that is running loose PLEASE don’t hesitate to call the city. This is the first step in making our community a safe place. There are city ordinances put in place to help, but they can only work if we as a community report the dogs that are running loose. The current ordinances will be looked at and changed to make owners more responsible for their pets.
Pet owners, it is your responsibility to make sure your dogs are licensed and kept on your property. If you love them as much as we love our donkeys you should make every effort to keep them safe. While we mourn the loss of our donkey we are however grateful that it wasn’t a human life that was taken.
At this time two of the three dogs have been destroyed and the owners will have to meet certain measures to keep the third dog. Nebraska law states that livestock owners may destroy any dogs that are endangering their livestock. Because of the recent attack on our donkeys this will be enforced on our property.
