May tulips bloom near the grave of Mirie Morton Pflum at Wauneta’s Riverside Cemetery. Pflum died at the age of 29 in 1917 while serving in the U.S. Navy in the Panama Canal zone during World War I. Memorial Day services will be held at cemeteries across the area as loved ones are remembered and members of the military are honored.

The Wauneta American Legion, Wauneta V.F.W. and auxiliary organizations have lined up Memorial Day commemoration services. They will start the morning with a military salute at Eden Cemetery southeast of Wauneta at 9 a.m. MT, followed by a second military salute at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery southwest of Wauneta at 9:30 am. MT.

At 10:30 a.m. MT a military salute and Memorial Day program will be held at Wauneta’s Riverside Cemetery. The morning’s program will open with the National Anthem performed by Dawn Doetker and Sara Behrends, followed by a guest speaker. The program will conclude with Doetker and Behrends leading the crowd in a patriotic sing-along.

The Palisade American Legion, V.F.W. and AmVets will conduct Memorial Day services at the Hamlet and Palisade cemeteries. Services at the Palisade Cemetery will begin at 9 a.m. MT/10 a.m. CT, followed by services at Hamlet’s Meadow Lawn Cemetery beginning at 10 a.m. MT/11 a.m. CT.


Lunch at the Wauneta Legion Hall

The Wauneta American Legion Auxiliary will host their annual Memorial Day Lunch at the Wauneta American Legion Hall following services at Riverside Cemetery Monday. Sloppy Joes, hot dogs, baked beans, salads and desserts will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. MT.
