A public hearing to gauge public support or criticism of a proposed amendment to the 2010-11 Wauneta-Palisade School budget preceded a special meeting of the Wau-Pal School Board Monday evening.
Board members unanimously voted to adopt the amendment to the current year budget, moving $185,565 in the General Fund from cash reserves to the Budgeted Disbursements and Transfers Fund. No citizens were in attendance for the public hearing.
The purpose of the budget amendment, which reduced the General Fund Cash Reserve, is to give the school board extra budget authority in the General Fund. It also allows the district to accept additional Federal Funds in order to provide flexibility amid growth restrictions spanning the next two years.
As WP Superintendent Stan Sibley put it, the move will help enlarge the “general fund pot,” which determines future growth in the district.
“This just gives us more flexibility in the years to come,” said WP School Board President Jon Anderjaska.
Following the amendment, the General Fund Cash Reserve goes from having $1,169,359 to $983,794. The Budgeted Disbursements and Transfers Fund grows from $4,508,365 to $4,693,930.
