The Wau-Pal boys and girls track teams combined to take home 13 medals at last Friday’s RPAC track meet in Arapahoe, but it was the girls who did the majority of the heavy lifting.

Strong performances by several individuals powered the Broncos girls team to a sixth place finish.

“Now the Broncos have a taste of what districts are going to be like,” said Wau-Pal Head Track Coach Dawn Doetker. “RPAC is a great test for us.”

Among those winning multiple medals was Shelby Hamilton, who took first in the discus and fourth in the shot put. She was joined by teammate Rebecca Strand, who placed second in the discus.

Underclassmen Abbie Fanning and Emma Skelton continue to show promise, with each athlete grabbing three medals at the meet. Fanning won the 800 meter run, placed fifth in the 400 meter dash and was a member of the seventh place-winning 1600 meter relay team.

Skelton earned sixth in both the 100 and 300 meter hurdles, and also took fourth in the long jump.

Also winning multiple medals for the girls was Jonee Maris, who took sixth in the high jump and was also a member of the 1600 meter relay team. Bethany Riener and Tailor Lee rounded out the 1600 meter relay team.

Rebecca Strand prepares to release the discuss in last Friday’s RPAC meet. Strand’s throw of 97’7” was good enough to earn second place, but first place went to her teammate Shelby Hamilton.

The RPAC meet was more of a struggle for the Wau-Pal boys track athletes.

Taking home only three medals on the day, WP finished twelfth among 14 teams.

The only boy to win more than one medal was Jacob Maris, who finished eighth in the 3200 meter run, and was a member of the 3200 meter relay team which placed eighth and set yet another new personal record. He was joined by Chris Bartels, Wes Anderjaska and Hayden Pollmann in setting the new best time.

Colby Skelton’s toss of 113’3” earned him eighth place in the discus throw, rounding out the scoring for the boys.

Next up for Wau-Pal is a date at tomorrow’s (Friday) Dundy County-Stratton Twilight Invite. Action begins at 12:30 p.m. MT/1:30 p.m. CT.

Tailor Lee was a member of the Broncos’ seventh place-winning 1600 meter relay team at last Friday’s conference meet.
