|‘Blue Jacket’ members shine during Wau-Pal FFA Banquet|

Achievements from the past 12 months were applauded and new honors bestowed during the Wauneta-Palisade FFA Chapter’s annual banquet held Thursday at the school Ag Shop.
A steak supper was served to members and guests, with Michael and Leland Maris manning the grill and families of chapter members providing a potluck selection of salads and desserts.
Randy Vlasin of Imperial made a repeat appearance as banquet speaker. Vlasin taught ag classes for 24 years and served as an FFA adviser at Chase County High School prior to entering the business community. He currently serves as executive director of the Chase County Community Hospital Foundation.

Vlasin offered “some friendly advice on what makes somebody a good employee.” Among his tips, which were highlighted by entertaining visuals during his PowerPoint presentation:
• Be Nice — listen, go the extra mile, keep promises, offer sincere compliments and learn to say you’re sorry.
• Seek first to understand, then to be understood.
• Put first things first; keep your priorities straight.
• Be proud of your rural heritage.
Wauneta-Palisade FFA Chapter Adviser Dan Andrews presented numerous awards throughout the evening, including the following:
Honorary Chapter Degree: John and Amey Jutten and Cliff and Shirley Riener.
Greenhand Degree: Tailor Lee, Cassidy Rathe, Tyrel Kerchal, Landon Jutten and Donald Hunt.
Chapter Degree: Tayler Nordhausen, John Christner and Jack McGraw.
Star Greenhand: Donald Hunt.

State Convention highlights
Andrews also gave recognition to members who earned their state degrees and to those who qualified for state competition. Five senior girls earned their State Degrees this year including Jutten, Maris, Riener, Rundback and Strand. The degrees were presented during the Nebraska State FFA Convention held earlier this spring.
Two WP teams qualified for state competition this year in food science and welding.

WP seniors Jutten and Rebecca Strand were joined by Sheyla Christner and Tayler Nordhausen in the food science contest, qualifying as wildcard entry. The foursome went on to capture second place at state.
Jack McGraw, Donald Hunt and Tyrel Kerchal represented the local chapter in the welding competition.

Laura Rundback receives the Star Chapter Award in Ag Production from Andrews. The WP senior concluded her term as chapter vice president Thursday night at the Wauneta-Palisade FFA’s annual banquet held at the school Ag Shop.
WP freshman Donald Hunt was the recipient of the Star Greenhand Award, presented by Andrews to the top first-year member. Among those watching the award presentations from the dais are Breann Maris, left, and Tailor Lee.
