Cool temperatures and cloudy skies were on the menu last Thursday, when the Wau-Pal junior high track team hosted their annual invite in Benkelman.

A second place team finish for the WP boys and a third place team finish for the WP girls was the result of the hard work by the Broncos.

Medalling in four individual events for the Bronco boys was Tyler Knotts, who won the 200 meter dash and the long jump, and took second place in the 100 meter dash and the 400 meter run.

Paul Behrends and Billy Straub join Knotts as the only other two boys to win multiple individual medals last Thursday. Behrends took second in the 1600 meter and third in the 800 meter. Straub placed second in the long jump and fourth in the 400 meter dash.

Other individual medal winners for WP include Christian Valdivizeo, who took home fifth in the discus throw, and Chase Rathe, who placed third in the 1600 meter run.

Setting the pace for the Bronco girls team was Sydnee Harchelroad, who captured three top finishes at the meet. Harchelroad placed first in the 200 meter dash, the 200 meter hurdles and the long jump. She also notched a second place victory in the triple jump.

Christi Christner, at left, glides over a hurdle in the 100 meter event. She won second place with a time of 20.9.

Fellow eighth grader Leiuana Alberts also took home three medals on the day, placing third in the 800 meter run, third in the 1600 meter run and fourth in the 100 meter dash.

Those winning in multiple events on the girls side also include Christi Christner, who took second place in the 100 meter hurdles and third place in the 200 meter hurdles, and Abby Gentry, who placed fifth in both the 100 and 200 meter hurdle events.

WP's Austin Hicks, at right, sprints down the track during the 100 meter dash.

Hannah Nordhausen had a solid toss of 74’8-1/2” to take first place in the discus throw, followed by Ellie Lee whose throw of 58’4” earned her sixth place.

Here’s a closer look at how both the girls and boys teams faired:
