A trip to the state wrestling meet didn’t last as long as anticipated for Keagan Haarberg and Alex Pollmann of the Hitchcock County/Wauneta-Palisade wrestling squad.

The two grapplers combined for a respectable 3-4 record during their visit to Omaha, with each wrestler losing to the eventual fifth place winner.

WP junior Keagan Haarberg, wrestling in the 189-pound bracket, lost his first match of the meet to Eric Draper of Raymond Central in a tough 8-0 decision. Haarberg bounced back, however, taking down Sergio Padilla of West Point-Beemer in the consolation bracket by an 8-2 margin.

It would be Haarberg’s only victory at state, however, as he was taken down 10-0 in the second round by Rhoderick Wagner of South Central Unified. Wagner went on to defeat Draper — Haarberg’s opening opponent — 10-4 to win fifth place.

Haarberg finishes the season with an impressive 41-7 record after completing his first ever trip to the state meet. The Wau-Pal junior said his nerves may have got the best of him, but he hopes to return to the Qwest Center next year for another shot at a medal.

“Next year, if I make it, I won’t be as nervous,” said Haarberg. “Next year, I hope to be more calm. Wrestling in front of that crowd was a rush.”

In the heavyweight division, HC/WP’s Alex Pollmann fared just a shade better.

Pollmann, also in his first-ever trip to the state meet, opened with an easy pin over John Tomasek of Oakland-Craig. Pollmann needed only 1:47 to take down his man.

In the next round, Pollmann struggled. He was pinned by Joel Sahulka of Weeping Water in 3:22. Sahulka later went on to lose the third place match to Izzy Martinez of Madison by a 7-2 decision.

Alex Pollmann, above at right, went 21-7 following his .500 performance in Omaha.

Pollmann rebounded, taking down Joshua Brahmsteadt of Centennial in a hard-fought 2-0 decision to keep his hopes of a third place or better finish alive. Those hopes were dashed as Pollmann ran into a buzzsaw in the form of Creighton/Verdigre’s Kyle Berglund in the quarter finals.

Berglund won a barn-burner of a wrestling match 13-9 to end Pollmann’s season. Berglund then went on to take fifth place in the tournament.

Pollmann finishes the wrestling season — a season he and his coaches weren’t even sure he would be a part of — with a 21-7 mark.

Expect Haarberg and Pollmann, both of whom return for their senior season next year, to make deep runs toward a medal-winning finish at the state tournament in 2012.
